Importation of Silverware.

Further to your letter of the 21st inst.concerning the above; the regulations concerning the importation of Bilverware are that same cannot be imported into this country other than for private use unless it is Hall-marked and stamped by the Goldsmiths' Hall. The cost of stamping is not a very expensive item but as far as we can gather from Experts, Hong Kong and Chinese Silverware will not come up to the English standard consequently it will be impossible to get

it stamped. The English standard is 925, whereas the Chine se

and Hong Kong Silver is generally about 850 and even lower. Certain articles are exempt from Assay and stamping, but they are mostly only small articles or filigree work and we do not

think any of the articles that you are desirous of importing for sale will come under these headings, as far as we can see

from the Invoices.
